Scherzo No. 2 (2013)
00:00 / 03:43
The piece contains more than a passing nod to the works of earlier composers, beginning with the famous octave leap of the Scherzo from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, but also relying heavily on hemiola (Dvorak and Beethoven) and including a trio that, at least to me, sounds a little like Shostakovich. The form is similar to a traditional scherzo and trio, but also reflects a rondo form, since the A section returns before the trio. The final section of the piece includes not only a return to the opening material, but overlays this music with the second theme, the trio theme, and one of the transitional themes before rushing to a dynamic conclusion.
